JASON K. SCHMITZ JOINS CHICAGO IP BOUTIQUE, ROSENBAUM IP, AS SHAREHOLDER AND CHAIR OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS AND GLOBAL BRAND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
Northbrook, Illinois: Chicago intellectual property boutique, Rosenbaum IP, today announced that it has added Jason K. Schmitz as a shareholder and chair of its Intellectual Property Transactions and Global Brand Management Practice Groups. The addition of Schmitz, a veteran attorney with nearly 20 years of BigLaw experience, adds valuable depth to the firm, which will benefit its national and global client base.
Schmitz was most recently a partner in the Chicago office of Vedder Price, and previously held the same titles at Baker & McKenzie and Mayer Brown. His addition is aligned with the firm’s strategic plan of identifying key lateral attorneys with established practices to help lead Rosenbaum IP’s organic growth. He assists clients in evaluating, structuring, negotiating and managing a wide variety of commercial IP and IT transactions and agreements. Notably, Schmitz was the lead IP attorney on a $1.8 billion trademark securitization of the key trademarks of a famous U.S. retailer. This was the biggest securitization of intellectual property in history according to Standard & Poor’s.
Schmitz also partners with his trademark clients on all aspects of U.S. and global brand management, supporting all stages of brand positioning in the marketplace, from development to brand protection and monetization. He has represented several of the world’s largest brands in the sports, financial, telecommunications and food and beverage industries in connection with the management of their global trademark portfolios. His global brand management work includes representation of clients before United States and global regulatory and enforcement boards, including the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Schmitz also has significant experience advising clients in connection with data privacy issues and acts as outside general counsel for many of his clients by managing all of their legal needs through his own experience and the expertise of his trusted network of U.S. and international attorneys.
“Jason’s technical abilities as a lawyer, his personable demeanor and his outstanding commitment to client service are primary among the many reasons he has such a long list of loyal and enduring clients,” said David G. Rosenbaum, Founder & Chairman of Rosenbaum IP. “As a former BigLaw partner myself, Jason and I and our entire Rosenbaum IP team have an outstanding value proposition – the high quality legal service typically associated with BigLaw firms in a more nimble and streamlined organization with a passionate focus on the client experience above all else.”
In addition to his substantial IP credentials, Schmitz has significant experience representing for profit and not-for-profit sports clubs in connection with all aspects of club management and legal issues. He serves on the Board of Directors of an Illinois-based competitive youth soccer club and is actively involved in charitable work with K9s for Warriors and various children’s museums in the Chicago area.
A thought leader in the area of intellectual property, Schmitz’s articles have been featured in numerous publications, including the Northwestern University School of Law Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property and The Licensing Journal. Schmitz earned his law degree with honors from the DePaul University College of Law and his undergraduate degree with honors from Michigan State University’s James Madison College.
